The city of Edmonton will host the Canadian soccer team in the opening match of the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup. Edmonton Events, a SportAccord Convention Silver Partner, has also secured 10 other games for the city during the month-long tournament - more games than any other Canadian host city.

Commonwealth Stadium in the Alberta capital will be the site of the first and second group matches of the 24-team tournament on June 6, 2015.

Mayor Stephen Mandel said: "I was getting chills down my back thinking about 60,000 people in the stadium, all wearing red and screaming for Canada. I think it's going to be one of the most special moments our city has ever seen."

Winnipeg, Ottawa, Montreal and Moncton are the other host cities.

The Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance announced this week that Edmonton will host its annual Sports Events Congress for the first time in 2014.

"Hosting the 2014 Sports Events Congress in Edmonton will support the ongoing development of high performance sport and sport tourism in our province," said Candice Stasynec, Executive Director, Office of the City Manager. "It will also be a major boost for our local tourism industry and for our goal of establishing Edmonton as a premier national and international centre for sport hosting."
